ABOUT US

People who call Amsterdam home have many reasons to feel lucky to live here: the village atmosphere, the beauty of the canals, the bustling cafés and bars, the rich cultural scene, the cosmopolitan population. Since March 2004, they've also had another reason: a one-of-a-kind free weekly paper called Amsterdam Weekly.

Amsterdam Weekly is something new for the city: an independent cultural paper that offers high-quality journalistic stories about city life and a critical guide to arts and culture. We present feature stories from the city's most diverse collection of writers and publish some of the city's most creative photographers and illustrators.

Amsterdam Weekly has been exhibited twice at the Design Museum in London (cited as one of 'the most inspiring design innovations to have been developed in Europe in the past two years'), and this year won three European Newspaper Awards for front page, photography (Han Eikelboom's Photo Notes series) and illustration.

How to contribute

Amsterdam Weekly regularly publishes the work of local freelance writers, photographers and illustrators. If you are interested in contributing, read through these guidelines and send us some ideas.

What we're looking for: We are interested in magazine-style features, set in Amsterdam, that tell stories about city life. We're keen on interview- and research-based stories about people, events or interesting situations that require a writer's eye for detail. For our Around Town section, we look for news stories with a fresh angle or a twist. We like stories that show and don't tell: that describe a person, scene or event to us in a revealing way rather than just telling us what you think. Our emphasis is on good reporting and quality writing.

Stories we run include:

  • urban exploration
  • profiles
  • narrative literary journalism
  • news features (on politics, urban affairs, culture and economics)
  • arts features
  • neighbourhood controversies and conflicts
  • historical tales
  • essays

We may occasionally run stories that go beyond Amsterdam. Story length will depend on a story's merits, but can range from 300 up to 2,500 words.

What we're not looking for: We're not specifically looking for service-oriented articles aimed at expats, foreigners or tourists ('Where to find babysitters' or 'How to get a work permit') or stories about the experience of being a foreigner. Our readers live here, so stories should reflect a resident's attitude. That said, we remain open to any well-executed idea.

Writing for our arts and culture guide: Amsterdam Weekly offers a weekly agenda of what's happening in Amsterdam, including stories and critical reviews of film, music, art, theatre, dining, and nightlife. We are interested in longer culturally oriented features and profiles, as well as short reviews and tips on the week's offerings in arts and entertainment. If you want to write a review, sketch or discussion, it is a good idea to get in touch with us first, to ensure that your idea has not already been assigned.

Submissions and commissions: We rely almost exclusively on freelancers and have an open submissions policy. We are more interested in the story you have to tell than in how much you have published in the past. In fact, we're especially interested in hearing from writers who have yet to be published or who may have access to a story that no one else is so uniquely qualified to tell. If you haven't written for Amsterdam Weekly before, or haven't published the kind of story we are interested in, we invite you to come up with an idea and write a story for us. Once we get to know your work, we may consider commissioning your next proposal. Once we've accepted your story, we may ask you to work with us to develop it until it is ready for publication. We will always seek a writer's approval of a final version of their story.

Timing: It is important that you let us know as early as possible about stories with time sensitivity, so that they can be planned for. Our response time to your proposals and manuscripts will vary according to the story. Generally you can expect a response within two to three weeks, but don't despair if it takes a little longer.

Illustrators and photographers: If you are a photographer or artist, please direct us to your website, send PDF files of your work, or contact our art director on Thursday and Friday afternoons to make an appointment to review your portfolio.

Payment and policies: We pay for every story we publish. We pay more for stories that require exceptional enterprise and research. Here is what we typically pay: €10 for a critic's pick in our Short List; from €50 to €150 for an Around Town story; and a range of €75 to €400 for feature stories. Payment is about one month following the publication date. We buy exclusive first rights. Rates include possible publication on our web site.

How to contact us: Please send manuscripts double-spaced, including your name, address, phone number(s) and email address. Send electronic files via email to . We look forward to your contributions to Amsterdam Weekly.
